Gender reveal parties are a very special moment for expecting parents. With so much anticipation and joy building during the first half of the pregnancy, people spend lots of time and money on gender reveal cakes, games and decorations. However, sometimes it works to go with a simple, DIY approach. This creative method not only adds a personal touch to the celebration but is budget-friendly and easy to put together. Check out Villie’s step-by-step guide to create your very own gender reveal box.
You can easily put this box together with a few supplies that you can order from Amazon or your grocery store.
Choose a box that is large enough to accommodate the number of balloons or other items you plan to use for the reveal. We recommend nothing smaller than 18" x 18" x 24" and what is really great is if you can find a used moving garment box. (Tip! Ask on Nextdoor or a local facebook group.) You can also repurpose a box from your recent online shopping spree or here’s an option that comes with decor.
If you purchased a plain box or are reusing one,, begin by wrapping the exterior with gender-neutral wrapping paper or fabric. Add extra decorations to the exterior of the box, such as stickers or a custom sign, to create a festive and eye-catching display. If your gender reveal party has a theme, use that for inspiration!
Here are some fun stickers to add some pizazz to the outside of your box.
Next, get the balloons and smoke for the big reveal! These will go inside the box and pop out to announce the gender. You can purchase your gender reveal smoke here and if you don’t have time to go stand in line at your local party store, you can also purchase balloons here.
Now for the fun part, assembling your box. Gently place the balloons and smoke in the box. If you want to be surprised too, have a trusted friend or family member discover the gender and do this part by adding in the correct color balloons for you! After the balloons and smoke are placed in the box, seal it carefully. We recommend that you seal the box with a bow so it’s easy to undo when the time is right.
If you want smoke to come out of the box, you have to get a good seal when it’s closed. Do this with tape, but make sure your box is sealed real well. This might take some tinkering, but you can do it!
With your DIY gender reveal box complete, it's time for the exciting moment everyone's been waiting for. Gather your friends and family for the gender reveal, and when you're ready, simply open the box. Watch as the balloons and smoke burst forth, revealing whether you're expecting a baby boy or girl.
